Notes for Leaders
  • It is ESSENTIAL to know the route of the walk and to have checked, as near to the date of the walk as possible, for any problems that may have arisen.

  • Leaders should not vary from the walk as defined in the programme unless an emergency or other conditions make it necessary.

  • Keep the group together at all times by walking at the front at the appropriate pace and by appointing a back marker who is known to the group and who, if possible, knows the route.

  • Give details of the walk including the terrain, length and pace of the walk before setting off so that members can decide whether the walk is suitable for them. Check if anyone has a medical condition you need to be aware of.

  • All leaders of midweek walks over access land need to check for closures.

  • If you are unable to lead the walk, appoint a substitute leader. If this is not possible or if there are any other changes to the walk email the Rambles Committee (rambles@sheffieldramblers.org) or phone John Taylor (0114 296 7393).

  • If you want to lead an additional walk, or have any other event not in the published programme, you can enter the walks using the online walks entry system. If you have not already registered to use the system email the Rambles Committee (rambles@sheffieldramblers.org) for a username and password. Only members are allowed to lead Ramblers walks.

  • Check transport times and meet the group at the departure point. If this is not possible appoint a substitute to meet the group.

  • All accidents and incidents should be noted and recorded, including details of any witnesses. Inform the Group Secretary as soon as possible.

  • Footpath Problems – Please report any problems encountered to the Rights of Way Secretary (rightsofway@sheffieldramblers.org) and if the problem is in Sheffield telephone the Public Rights of Way Unit on 0114 273 4448.
